How these rooms were chosen

Every room here is described on the restaurant’s own site with a capacity, a shape and a way to book it. That is the filter, because a room you can size before you call is a room you can actually compare. “Best” is an editorial judgment about fit for a particular kind of evening, made from what each restaurant publishes; it is not a ranking of the cooking, and none of it comes from a meal eaten in the room. Each one is a single dedicated space rather than a buyout, which keeps the comparison to groups of roughly 10 to 25.

Best for a single-table dinner: Gramercy Tavern

Gramercy Tavern lists its Private Dining Room for up to 20 guests for lunch and dinner daily. Its event kit describes one custom table by Maine artisan Greg Lipton under a wood-beamed ceiling, with leaves so the table is set to your party’s size. For dinner, arrivals can be booked from 5:30 to 9pm and the room is held until 11:30pm regardless of when you arrive; for lunch, arrivals run from 11:45am to 1:30pm with the room held until 3:30pm.

The kit is also the most complete set of terms in this guide. It states that no room fee is charged, prints food and beverage minimums by season, and says the culinary team “will always accommodate all allergies and dietary restrictions.” Menu selections happen ten days before the event, once the contract is signed. Inquiries go through an online form.

Best for a milestone or a meeting with screens: Eleven Madison Park

Eleven Madison Park publishes its Private Dining Room in a 2026–2027 events deck: up to 24 guests at one large table, up to 27 at three round tables, or 30 standing. The room’s centerpiece is a floor-to-ceiling painting by Francesco Clemente, and the deck pitches it for a seated dinner, a reception or a business meeting.

It is one of the few rooms in the city that addresses equipment in writing: audio-visual gear and an on-site technician can be arranged through the events team at an additional charge, with ten days’ notice. Plan the money early, too. The deck asks for a signed contract and a deposit of 50% of the food and beverage minimum, and that deposit becomes non-refundable within 56 days of the event. The events office is on (646) 747-2607.

Best for privacy: La Pecora Bianca’s Havana Room

La Pecora Bianca at 1133 Broadway in NoMad describes the Havana Room as “located on the lower level and is fully enclosed with a sliding door,” with its own temperature controls and space for 20 guests on one long rectangular table. The name comes from the building’s past as the humidor of the Havana Tobacco Company.

For a dinner with toasts, or a conversation nobody else should hear, those details matter more than décor. The restaurant offers prix fixe menu options and says its sommelier can recommend wine to match your budget. If the group outgrows the room, its page lists a full buyout for 120 seated or 140 reception style.

Best for a small group with a flexible start time: L’Artusi

L’Artusi at 228 West 10th Street lists its Private Wine Room for up to 14 guests and sells it three ways: an early seating from 6 PM, a late seating from 9:30 PM, or the entire night. Food and beverage minimums apply.

That structure is the useful part. If your preferred Saturday is taken at 6 PM, the 9:30 PM seating may still be open, and a full-night hold means nobody is seated after you. Name the seating you want in your first message. Our guide to how far ahead to book a private room explains why the seating, not the date, is usually what sells out.

Best for ten or fewer: Union Square Cafe’s Alcove

Most private rooms in Manhattan start around 20 seats, which leaves a party of eight rattling around a space built for twice that. Union Square Cafe at 101 East 19th Street lists the Alcove for 6 to 10 guests at a single black walnut oval table by Maine artisan Mark White. It is semi-private, overlooking the main dining room, so it suits a celebration with some buzz around it better than a confidential meeting.

The restaurant’s event documents set the same arrival windows for the Alcove as for its larger room: 11:30am to 1:30pm for lunch or brunch, held until 3:30pm, and 5 to 9pm for dinner, held until 11pm.

Best for dinner plus an activity: Il Fiorista

Il Fiorista at 17 West 26th Street lists its private dining room at 25 seated or 40 standing. What sets it apart is the menu of add-ons on the same page: floral arrangement classes, pasta making classes, cocktail making classes and wine pairing experiences. For a team outing where the evening needs something to do as well as something to eat, that is a different answer from a table. Inquiries go through the page’s form or info@ilfioristanyc.com.

What do these private dining rooms cost?

Most of these restaurants route pricing to an inquiry, and the ones that publish a schedule print a food and beverage minimum rather than a room fee. As a typical current benchmark, the two Union Square-area restaurants that publish full schedules put a 20-to-40-seat room at roughly $4,500 to $5,000 for dinner from January to November and $6,000 to $7,500 in December, with gratuity and sales tax on top; small semi-private tables run lower. Treat those as benchmarks and confirm the figure for your date with the events coordinator. Our breakdown of private dining minimum spend in NYC covers what moves the number.

Deposits are where the money commits. Eleven Madison Park asks for half the minimum and keeps it within 56 days of the event; Gramercy Tavern and Union Square Cafe also take half the minimum, refundable only more than 28 days out. Find that date before you sign.

How to book one of these rooms

Decide the meal period and the seating first, because several of these rooms are sold by time slot rather than by day. Then send the same short email to two or three of them: date and a backup date, arrival and departure time, a headcount floor and ceiling, whether the room must be fully enclosed, and whether you need a screen. If you do, ask for the AV lead time in writing; Eleven Madison Park’s ten days is the only one published here.

If your list is heading past 25, the shortlist changes: see restaurants with private rooms near Union Square for rooms up to 44, sorted by listed capacity. For a 30th, 40th or 50th birthday specifically, The Birthday Table’s guide to booking a milestone birthday dinner covers the guest-list side.

Do NYC private dining rooms charge a room fee?
