Private Dining for Lunch in NYC: Rooms That Host Midday

Harriet Vance · October 30, 2026 · 8 min read

Private dining for lunch in NYC: lunch minimums, hold times and menu prices at The Modern, Gramercy Tavern, Union Square Cafe and Ci Siamo, plus Aquavit.

The Modern, Gramercy Tavern, Union Square Cafe and Ci Siamo each publish lunch terms for a private room in their event kits, and Aquavit prices a private lunch at $135 per person. From January to November the four lunch minimums for their main private rooms run from $1,500 to $4,000, about 29% to 47% of the same room’s regular dinner minimum, with no room fee at any of them.

Hours, prices and policies below come from each restaurant’s own website and event kits, checked in October 2026.

Which NYC restaurants publish lunch terms for a private room?

Eight restaurants are compared, ordered by how much midday detail each prints. Dollar figures are as of October 2026: minimums at the first four, which leave out gratuity and 8.875% sales tax, and per-person prices at Aquavit, where tax, 20% gratuity and a 5% administrative fee come on top.

Can you book a private room for lunch in NYC?

Yes. Seven of the eight name lunch for a private room, though the wording differs; Balthazar says only “day or night.” The Modern says its private dining room “is available to reserve Monday through Sunday for breakfast, lunch, and dinner,” and Gramercy Tavern’s seats up to 20 “for lunch and dinner daily.” Pete’s Tavern lists “sit down ‘Family Style’ lunches & dinners” among its menu plans.

None publishes open lunch dates. As of October 2026, the private-dining pages at Gramercy Tavern and Ci Siamo list open dinner dates and say “For lunches and future dinner dates, please inquire with our team for up to date availability.” Union Square Cafe’s page prints no list. A lunch is a question for the events team, not a calendar to check.

Gramercy Tavern’s kit writes its deposit rule for dinner reservations, so ask what applies at lunch. How to book a business lunch near Union Square covers the noise and hard-stop questions.

How long can you stay in a private dining room at lunch?

Three kits fix an arrival window and a hold time, and the hold does not move with a later arrival. Gramercy Tavern takes arrivals from 11:45 AM to 1:30 PM; Union Square Cafe (Park & Irving Room and Alcove) and Ci Siamo from 11:30 AM to 1:30 PM. All three hold the room until 3:30 PM, which leaves 2 hours for the latest arrival and 3 hours 45 minutes (Gramercy Tavern) or 4 hours (the others) for the earliest.

The Modern’s lunch kit starts at 11:30AM “onward” with an end time of 3:00PM, so 3 hours 30 minutes at most. A noon start gets 3 hours 30 minutes at the first three and 3 hours at The Modern. Pete’s Tavern caps every event at 3 hours “with departure times strictly enforced.” Aquavit’s kit prints no lunch window; its beverage packages assume a 3-hour event.

Is private dining cheaper at lunch than at dinner?

Yes, against the regular dinner minimum at every restaurant that prints both, as of October 2026. From January to November the lunch minimum is 29% of dinner at Ci Siamo ($2,500 against $8,500, Monday to Saturday), 30% at Union Square Cafe’s Park & Irving Room ($1,500 against $5,000, Monday to Saturday), 39% at Gramercy Tavern ($1,750 against $4,500) and 46% to 47% at The Modern ($3,000 against $6,500 on Friday to Sunday, $4,000 against $8,500 on Monday to Thursday). Ci Siamo and Union Square Cafe price Sunday dinner separately, at $3,000 all year, which is still above their January-to-November lunch minimums.

Menus follow, less steeply, at 51% to 85% of dinner: Ci Siamo’s family-style lunch is $95 per guest against $185, Union Square Cafe’s three-course lunch $95 against $175, The Modern’s $165 against $265, Aquavit’s $135 against $175. Gramercy Tavern prints two lunch menus, $125 (two choices per course) and $165 (three), against $195 at dinner. Its kit calls them “current offerings as of July 13th” and gives no year, so confirm all three prices.

At a fuller table the menu sets the bill. If menu charges count toward the minimum (confirm with the venue), the menu alone clears it at 14 guests for Gramercy Tavern’s $125 lunch (20 in December), 16 for Union Square Cafe’s $95 lunch in Park & Irving, 27 for Ci Siamo’s $95 lunch (37 in December) and 25 for The Modern’s $165 lunch from Monday to Thursday (19 on Friday to Sunday, 40 in December). Each is the minimum divided by the menu price, rounded up.

Is a December lunch the cheaper holiday party?

At these four, yes, against regular dinners. The December lunch minimum sits 3,500 to 8,000 dollars below the December dinner minimum: Gramercy Tavern $2,500 against $6,000, Union Square Cafe $1,500 against $7,500 (Monday to Saturday), Ci Siamo $3,500 against $11,500 (Monday to Saturday), The Modern $6,500 against $12,500. The exception is Ci Siamo’s $3,000 Sunday dinner, which is $500 below its December lunch minimum. Lunch itself steps up in December at three of the four: 40% at Ci Siamo, about 43% at Gramercy Tavern and from $4,000 or $3,000 to $6,500 at The Modern. Union Square Cafe’s $1,500 stays flat.

Why December costs more explains the step, and holiday party venues in NYC adds rooms up to a 200-seat buyout. For a lunch with no room involved, a sister publication compares lunch and dinner menus at six Manhattan Italian restaurants.

What size group can host a private lunch in a restaurant?

Room capacities as published in October 2026; no page gives a separate figure for lunch.

  • 6 to 10 guests: Union Square Cafe’s Alcove, with the lowest lunch minimum printed here, $450.
  • Up to 20: Gramercy Tavern’s single-table room.
  • 21 to 30: Aquavit’s Linné Salon and The Modern’s one long table (a maximum of 30).
  • 31 to 50: Union Square Cafe’s Park & Irving Room (40 seated), Pete’s Tavern’s Speakeasy Room (44 for a sit-down meal) and Ci Siamo’s room (50 seated).
  • 51 to 76: The Modern’s room seats 64, Aquavit’s Nobel Room 76 (the kit’s round-table layout lists 80).

Aquavit’s Linné Salon, the room its page suggests for lunch meetings, has two seated numbers. The web page says “up to 27 seated guests”; the kit’s description says “seated events of up to 30 people,” yet the kit’s own layouts end at 27. For a lunch, plan on 27 until Aquavit confirms 30 in writing.

Which NYC restaurants have private dining at breakfast?

Two of the eight print a breakfast price. The Modern’s breakfast kit takes reservations from 8:00AM with an end time of 10:00AM, prices a family-style table at $120 per person, and sets the minimum at $4,000 every day from January to November and $6,500 in December. Aquavit’s kit lists breakfast at $90 per person, and its web page calls the Linné Salon “ideal for breakfast or lunch meetings.” The other pages checked print no private-breakfast price. Union Square Cafe’s kit offers brunch instead: $90 per guest, Saturdays and Sundays only.

What the eight pages leave out

A restaurant is compared when its own pages or event kit describe a private room at midday; no reservation platform or review site was consulted. This is a selection, not every NYC restaurant with a lunch room. Of the eight, four print lunch minimums, five a per-person lunch price, four an arrival window or end time, and none a lunch date list.

So ask for the arrival window, the hold time, the date the final count locks and whether menu charges count toward the minimum. The Modern, Union Square Cafe and Ci Siamo kits each ask for a 50% deposit, refundable in full if cancelled more than 28 days out. Confirm each figure with the events coordinator.
